Mexico/Belize – November 2016

Nov 9, 2016 – Arrival into Cancun, Mexico

We arrived into Cancun late, getting to our hotel about midnight.

We stayed at the Hotel Los Girasoles in the city centro.  It is a small tucked away hotel with a nice little outdoor seating area and breakfast restaurant.  The beds were not the most comfortable but it’s a great place for the price.

Nov 10, 2016 – Tour to Chichen Itza

We booked our tour via Viator and had to make our way to Hotel Bonampak for an 8am pickup.

Nov 11, 2016 – Tour to Tulum, Coba, Cenote Tankach-Ha and Playa Del Carmen

Our hotel staff booked us the Tulum/Coba tour for pickup at 7am.  The tour company made a mistake and put us on the longer tour.

Nov 12, 2016 – Travel from Cancun to San Ignacio, Belize

We flew on Tropic Air on a little Cessna from Cancun to Belize City.  It was the smallest plane that we’ve ever flown on.

Our hotel sent a car to pick up up in Belize City to drive us the 2 hours to San Ignacio where we were staying.

We checked in at the Rainforest Haven Hotel.  This is a great hotel with wonderful staff. We would highly recommend staying here.  It is right near the city center of San Ignacio, has great views from the roof, has a shared kitchen, and has extremely helpful and friendly staff.

The hotel staff are wizards with towels.

Nov 13, 2016 – Actun Tunichil Mukal (ATM) Cave Tour

Our hotel booked this tour for us, and it was way more adventurous than we expected.  However, it was pretty awesome.  Unfortunately, no pictures were allowed on the tour but they used to allow them so you can see a lot of images if you Google it.

This tour was real spelunking.  We had to cross two rivers to get to the cave entrance, and then had to swim our way into the cave.  There was climbing and wedging through small holes to get to the back of the cave.  Once there we saw some really cool archaeological findings like pots and actual human remains from sacrifices.

We made some new friends, Troy and Tracy, on this tour.  We ended up having dinner with them as well.  They are very interesting and incredibly nice guys who are riding their motorcycles from the farthest north location in Alaska to the southern most tip of South America.  You can see their journey at CrossingTheAmericas.com.

There was also a Super Moon this night.

Nov 14, 2016 – Caracol Tour

Our hotel also booked this tour for us, and it was different kind of adventure.  2.5 hours each way on pretty much all bumpy dirt roads.

The Caracol site of Mayan Ruins is pretty amazing.  There is still a lot to be excavated, so we look forward to going back in the future.

Nov 15, 2016 – Green Iguana Conservation Project

We visited the Green Iguana Conservation Project.  Here we were able to hold, feed, and learn about iguanas.  They rescue and rehabilitate injured iguanas, as well as, find iguana eggs in the wild and bring them in to hatch and raise. These iguanas are nearing the endangered species list so they are doing what they can to keep them around.  They keep the iguanas until they are about 15 years old and then release them into the wild.

This sweet little girl has the equivalent of scoliosis.  You can see she is deformed, but that does not stop her from being a good cuddler. She loves attention.

Nov 16, 2016 – Headed Home

After an amazing and incredibly hot short vacation, we headed home.  The 2 hour drive back to the Belize City airport, then jumped our flight back to the US.
